Pack List
WHAT TO BRING
Pack the night before so you're not scrambling. Here's your checklist.
Gi classes
Athletic wear under the gi, water bottle, small towel, thongs for off-mat. We have loaner gis.
No-Gi / wrestling / boxing
Rash guard or fitted tee, board shorts or leggings, water bottle, small towel.
Before you leave home
Trim nails, remove jewellery, tie long hair back. Keeps everyone safe on the mats.
What NOT to bring: your ego. Leave it at the door. Shoes too.
Step by Step
YOUR FIRST CLASS
Zero surprises. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you walk in.
ARRIVE EARLY
10 min before class
Walk in, say hello to the coach or any member. We'll sort your loaner gi, show you where to leave your things, and point you to the mats.
GROUP WARM-UP
~10 minutes
Light jogging, stretching, and basic movement drills. Go at your own pace. If something is too much, scale it back.
LEARN 2 - 3 TECHNIQUES
~30 minutes
The coach demonstrates, then you practise with a partner. An experienced member will be paired with you. You won't remember everything - that's normal.
LIVE SPARRING (OPTIONAL)
~15 minutes
Some classes finish with "rolling" - live grappling at a controlled pace. You can sit out and watch. Plenty of people observe for their first few sessions.
COOL DOWN & CHAT
~5 minutes + hang
Class ends with a bow and cool-down. Stick around if you can - the post-class chat is where you start feeling like part of the team.
We've Heard It All
DON'T WORRY ABOUT...
We hear these from every single new member. All of them.
"I'm not fit enough"
You build BJJ fitness by doing BJJ. The warm-up is scalable, and the coach will tell you to take breaks. Nobody walks in fit for jiu jitsu - you get fit from jiu jitsu.
"I'll look stupid"
Every person on those mats was a white belt once. They remember, which is why they'll be patient with you. Looking lost is just part of week one.
"I'm too old"
Members in their 50s started as beginners. Technique beats strength.
"I'll get hurt"
No striking in BJJ. The tap system stops any submission instantly.
"I'll be the only beginner"
New members start every week. You won't be alone.
"I don't know anyone"
Neither did anyone else. By month two, they're mates.
Juniors Program
FOR PARENTS
What to know if your child is starting at FJJ.
Stay and watch
There's a viewing area. Most parents stay for the first few sessions until their child is comfortable.
It's OK if they're shy
Some kids jump in, others take a session or two to warm up. Both are completely normal.
What they'll learn
Juniors 1 (ages 3-7) is play-focused. Juniors 2 (ages 8-15) introduces technical BJJ and controlled sparring.

You'll be tired. Muscles you didn't know existed will remind you they're there. That fades after the first week or two.
Most people feel a weird mix of exhaustion and excitement. If that's you, come back within the week while it's fresh. Three sessions is usually when it clicks.
No commitment required. Come casual, come back when you're ready, train at whatever pace works for you.
